In We Slay Monsters, there is the dungeon in front of your adventurer, and there is the Academy for Dungeoneering you are rebuilding. One is a short, dangerous assignment. The other needs to outlast the person you sent to do it.

The monsters are not especially interested in your long-term plans. The academy gives you a reason to have them anyway.

One dungeon at a time

Dungeon runs take about 15–25 minutes, if your hero survives. Each expedition is a short assignment within the longer job of rebuilding the school.

The combat is turn-based and uses poker-inspired card hands. You can look at your options before committing to a move. A short dungeon does not mean you have to rush every decision inside it.

An adventurer faces monsters in a green dungeon, with health, a map, and a hand of combat cards visible.

A school with unfinished business

The Academy for Dungeoneering once defeated evil so thoroughly that it put itself out of business. More than twenty years later, evil is returning, and the King wants the school reopened. An excellent time to discover whether anyone kept the keys.

Reopening it means rescuing teachers, training recruits, and rebuilding the academy. Completing quests for nearby towns earns gold, which you can spend on academy upgrades that make your recruits stronger.

That gives the dungeon expeditions a larger context. You are not just sending an adventurer into trouble. You are rebuilding the place that prepares future adventurers for it.

Heroes come and go. The academy stays.

In the campaign, a hero's death is permanent. The academy and its upgrades, however, persist between heroes. You can recruit another adventurer and send them into the dungeon without starting the academy over.

So there are two scales to the campaign: the individual expedition and the longer project of rebuilding the school. Rebuilding the Academy for Dungeoneering gives those short expeditions a longer-term purpose.
